I had heard for years about the famous bat population that exists in Austin just under the Congress St Bridge. Hundreds of people line up along the bridge while others camp out on the lawn by the shore to catch the spectacle. The Bats apparently reside within the two inch expansion gaps beneath the bridge and come out to hunt insects anywhere from as early as dusk until midnight or later. This makes planning to see them difficult as they 'decide' to make their appearance whenever they please; however, when they do come out, it is an eerie eruption of flying creatures spilling out hundreds if not thousands at a time.
The bats can be heard from under the bridge making their sonorific squeaks, not to mention smelled from their pungent droppings along the Ladybird Lake Trail.
